Explore the history of the unique village of Alva on the banks of the Caloosahatchee River, only 15 minutes from Exit 141 of Interstate 75. Learn about the early Alva settlers, including Alva’s founder, Captain Peter Nelson, who purchased the homestead, which he named Alva in 1883, and who later donated the land upon which the Alva Library and Museum sits.
The Alva Library was built in 1909 and served as the first public lending library in Lee County. In 1974, members of the Alva Garden Club and trustees of the Alva Library Association collected artifacts which were donated by descendants of the original settlers of Alva and other local residents in possession of historical items. No longer in use as a library, the property became the museum as it exists today. The original 1901 Owanita Baptist Church, which was relocated to the lot in 1975, is now part of the museum.
The public is welcome to visit free of charge on Saturdays from 2 to 4 pm from October through May. Tours for groups are welcome and can be arranged by appointment by calling 239-822-4596.
