Celebrate 2024 Hispanic Heritage Month in Fort Myers
Mid-September marks the start of National Hispanic Heritage Month, honoring the cultures, traditions and contributions of Hispanic and Latin American communities throughout the U.S. In Southwest Florida, Hispanic culture often has roots from places such as Cuba, Puerto Rico, South America, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic, among many others. Explore cultural family festivals, activities and throughout the Fort Myers area.
A Tasty Celebration
Get ready for one of the most-anticipated cultural events of the season! Taste of Latino will take place Saturday, October 12, 2024 at Centennial Park in downtown Fort Myers. From noon to 6 p.m., this free family event features music and dance in the park — you only need to bring a lawn chair or a blanket to enjoy the festivities. Find all the comfort food, including Cuban sandwiches and tacos, and save some space for the Great Empanada Smackdown.
Culture Through Cuisine
While there’s no shortage of delicious taquerias and taco trucks, it’s also easy to expand your culinary horizons throughout the Fort Myers area. El Acajutla’s pupusas are a Central American staple, made with soft masa dough pressed with meat, cheese and veggies and topped with a tangy slaw. Wash it down with a refreshing passion fruit or soursop smoothie. If you’re craving delicious seafood, Sunqu Delights of Peru in North Fort Myers offers a variety of ceviches, along with hearty stews and satisfying Peruvian rice platters. In the heart of Cape Coral, Cubay Restaurant is as authentic as it gets, with everything from oversized Cuban sandwiches to tasty tostones.
Feel the Rhythms
Sultry nights were made for salsa at The Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center. Join free salsa dance parties at Sidney’s Rooftop Sculpture Garden and sign up for private lessons. Latin Night dance DJs and other festive events fill up the calendar.
In time to honor this month, dance along to “Latin Legends: Selena and Shakira,” a live musical tribute to the iconic singers appearing at Seminole Casino Hotel Immokalee on Saturday, October 5. Honor the Queen of Tejano, as portrayed by artist Nira Perez, while Sunny Haymes embodies Shakira in a mesmerizing performance.
What does this month mean to you? We can’t wait to celebrate with you!
